John M. Whitley, M.D., Ph.D.

John M. Whitley, M.D., Ph.D.Dr. Whitley is a native North Carolinian who earned his MD degree from Wake Forest University in 1990. Prior to completing medical school, Dr. Whitley was an academic neuroscientist having completed an MS and Ph.D. in Neuroscience/Anatomy at Wake Forest University. He completed a post-doctoral appointment at the George Washington School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Following completion of the MD degree, Dr. Whitley took internship in general surgery and completed neurological surgery training at the Medical College of Georgia. In 1996, Dr. Whitley established a neurosurgical service in Monroe, Louisiana and was there in solo practice then relocated to Valdosta, Georgia in 2000. Leaving Valdosta brought Dr. Whitley here to Oak Ridge in 2004 and he is now in practice at Oak Ridge Neurosurgery and Spine Center. Dr. Whitley has over 50 published articles pertaining to head trauma and cerebral blood flow pathology and has completed research for the United States Air Force. Dr. Whitley is board certified with the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a member of the Tennessee Medical Association.

Dr. Whitley finds it a privilege to serve patients. He prefers a personalized one-on-one approach and enjoys sitting down and talking with each patient in a relaxed, non-hurried environment.

Dr. Whitley has two children. As a family they enjoy motor boating and traveling. He is very active in his daughter Alyson’s non-profit animal rescue program Save For Life. When time permits, Dr. Whitley enjoys flying helicopters.
